Wagner Tubas

We went to a WASO concert last night where we heard the massive Bruckner Symphony No 7 - 70 minutes long - and featurning a huge brass section - 18 players - 19 instruments - 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, tuba, bass tuba, 5 french horns and 4 Wagner Tubas. The sounds was HUGE when they all let it rip together! The WT has a lovely sound - brighter than the FH and less strident than the trumpet. The highlight of the second movement - meant to indicate the moment of the death of Wagner - is when the percussionist (who only has one job to do for the whole symphony )- clashes the cymbals (at the right moment hopefully!). The guy last night did it with great aplomb and received a special round of applause at the end!
